Cash Mandate does NOT mandate cash!

Treasury released draft regulations for the proposed cash acceptance mandate very quietly late on Friday afternoon 17th October 2025.

The draft regulations mean the proposed cash mandate will ONLY apply to:

Large supermarkets

Large petrol Stations

Transactions under $500

Any retailers can refuse cash by claiming it's too difficult to accept cash.

This is not just less than was promised. This cash mandate greenlights the cashless society.

A cash mandate is supposed to ensure that cash is accepted at all retailers, with very few exceptions.

Jim Chalmers previously said the cash mandate would apply to all retailers selling essentials including food, medicine and fuel.

He released a list of essential items that included housing, car repairs, clothing, drinks, utility bills and other essentials of life.

Since announcing the 'cash mandate' Jim Chalmers seems to have changed his mind and decided that cash should not be mandated at all.

Jim Chalmers seems to want to see the end of cash in Australia.

Supermarkets will only be required to have one cash terminal. Supermarkets can even claim to be be a small business and HAVE NO CASH TERMINALS.

Or supermarkets can claim they tried to accept cash but its too difficult ...

If retailers are allowed to claim it's too difficult to accept cash, banks will ensure it's difficult.

Anyone can make a submission before the end of October. Here is the link to make a submission: https://consult.treasury.gov.au/c2025-707578
